Horn sliver in nock question

(1/1)

silberz:
I have been adding the horn sliver to the nock end but mine seem to be about 1/4 thick in a 11/32 shaft, I always read where people say to use about 1/16 thick sliver but is there any down side to using a thicker sliver of horn?
Thank you for the info
Max

Justin Snyder:
Only down side I can see is that you only have about 1.5/32 of wood on each side of the horn.  That isn't really enough to even stabilize the horn and keep it from popping off the side of the arrow. Unless you cut a V where the horn and shaft meet I would go narrower. Justin

Pat B:
I have used rawhide as a spine in reinforced nock with excellent results. One saw blade kerf and a little sanding and it it ready to glue with TBIII. I read about rawhide spines in Glenn St Charles' book, "Billets to Bows".
