Checking selfbows ability?

<< < (2/3) > >>

Kegan:
The Bent Stick tests the bows in that manner. 150 is about average, and accaptable for hunting. Since I don't have a long open space, I check my point-on distance. I'm aiming for 60 yards, but most of my bows shoot about 50-55 yards point-on.

John K:
I'd check with the State you hunt in....most have a minimum draw weight, In Wisconsin, it's 30#'s

Bentstick81:
I know what the State minimum is, just was wondering if anyone had heard of this type of bow checking. Kegan, i like the idea of the point-on method. i will try it and see how my bows do. Thanks for the idea. Besides, its fun to watch the arrow in flight.

Hillbilly:
You're absolutely right-shooting for distance can tell you much more than just checking draw weight. The thing that matters is how much energy is making it into the arrow, not how much energy it takes to pull it back. It's entirely possible for a well-made 45# bow to outshoot an ineffecient 60# bow. I think the 150 yard average for a 50 # bow is based on a 500 grain arrow (10 grains per lb of draw weight.)

deersled:
what type of angle are you holding the bow at?
