I have my tools and I have flint, now what do I do?
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:32:19 pm »
I bought the knap pack from 3 rivers. I also bought a pound of flint. It came with some directions but it seems that the directions are for someone who has some experience with knapping.
Could someone explain some basic technique's or some pictures. Or could you point me in a general direction on the internet or a book.

I feel completely lost.

Thanks,
Bob

have you watched any Utube videos on knapping? got to utube and search for flint knapping.
Or check out paleoplanet flintknapping beginners... they have links to a TOn of videos.
there is a ton of good education out there.

yea.. like n2 said the flintnapping beginners form on paleo planet is a good idea.
Best is to get some one on one with another knapper.
If you could make it to the TN Classic in May your find a bunch of friendly help there.

That's it, yutubes (from what I hear), video's, or a good book. As already said, getting together with someone is the best medicine. You may be able to knock off some small spalls till then and work on your pressure flaking.
When you come upon a track or trail you do not know, follow it to the point of knowing.

I f you can get to a knapin you will learn more watching for a couple of hours than you ever will from videos or books.  Short of actually seeing someone do it utube is your best  bet.
