elderberry

loefflerchuck:
Has anyone had any luck using elderberry shafts for arrows? I cut various red berried  variety from the bay area and they are all way to brittle.

If people can make elderberry bows then it should be good enough for arrows. Over here in England there is a world of difference between the wood of the trunk and shoots though. The heartwood is the densist native timber, the pith the lightest!

I have some drying, haven't tried making shafts yet. This is the eastern black Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis/nigra.)
