How to make cheap string silencers
« on: August 01, 2009, 05:53:22 PM »
Hunting seasons just around the corner and I'm sure most all of you are starting to get ready for the opening day of season.  I still need to get together some matched arrows and work on my shooting some more. So before I get really involved with tuning my bow, I decided to make some silencers for the string.
Most self bows are naturally quiet, but I like the added silence of string silencers. I know they might rob a little cast from a bow, but it's a trade I'll gladly make.
I've had several people ask me how I make mine so I decided to take a few pictures and post them.

The first thing you need is a piece of wood about 1-1/2" thick x 2-1/4" wide and about 4" long. Mine is just a piece of a pine 2x4.
You'll also need some yarn and a tube of Barge cement. The yarn is better if it's at least a wool blend, but pure wool is best.

First thing to do is start wrapping the yarn pretty tightly around the wood block starting at one end and working your way down about 3"
Be thankfull for all you have, because no matter how bad you think it is...it can always be worse.

Next, run a thick bead of Barge cement down the narrow side of the wood on both sides and work it down into the fibers.
Then wrap back over the first layer till you get back to where you started.  Then lay another bead of Barge down and work it in also.

Once this dries, (a couple hours is plenty) cut down the middle of the glue lines and gently pull both sides off. This should leave you with two bundles of yarn bound at the ends with glue.

Next, figure out where you want them on your string and seperate your string in half.  Slide them in and brace the bow.

Apply a good bit of wax to the string where it contacts the bundles and carefully cut the glued ends off.
After you cut off the glue ends, give the string a few plucks and the string will twist back up and form a neat little puff ball.

You can adjust the size to your liking if you want.
These are super cheap and you can make about any color you want. Not to mention they work great for quieting a bow string.

Hope this helps some of you out. ;)
