I have just killed a rabbit.........sort of.
Tsalagi:
Just a little hint, if I may say. A rabbit isn't a "despicable varmint". It's a living being, and you ate part of it. So, if it's a despicable varmint and you ate part of it, you become a despicable varmint by default. You follow me? Part of being a true hunter is respect for the animals we kill. They give their lives so we may eat. I didn't have anyone to show me this growing up, because I didn't have a dad. I had to be shown these things by some elders, much later. So, I'm not saying this to make you feel bad or anything. I'm just saying that animals are living beings and we should always show respect in the way we talk about them, especially publicly where our actions are judged by the weight of our words. In closing, let me paste something here that explains it best:
On Eating and Drinking
Kahlil Gibran
Would that you could live on the fragrance of the earth, and like an air plant be sustained by the light.
But since you must kill to eat, and rob the newly born of its mother's milk to quench your thirst, let it then be an act of worship.
And let your board stand an altar on which the pure and the innocent of forest and plain are sacrificed for that which is purer and still more innocent in man.
When you kill a beast say to him in your heart,
"By the same power that slays you, I too am slain; and I too shall be consumed.
For the law that delivered you into my hand shall deliver me into a mightier hand.
Your blood and my blood is naught but the sap that feeds the tree of heaven."
And when you crush an apple with your teeth, say to it in your heart,
"Your seeds shall live in my body,
And the buds of your tomorrow shall blossom in my heart,
And your fragrance shall be my breath,
And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons."
And in the autumn, when you gather the grapes of your vineyards for the winepress, say in your heart,
"I too am a vineyard, and my fruit shall be gathered for the winepress,
And like new wine I shall be kept in eternal vessels."
And in winter, when you draw the wine, let there be in your heart a song for each cup;
And let there be in the song a remembrance for the autumn days, and for the vineyard, and for the winepress.

Tsalagi, to the higher plane,
Recurve shooter, you are a force to be reckoned with:)

At least you got the rabbit. Once, a few years back, my boss and I were out with our bows stalking a few jack rabbits. They were lined up real pretty...bunny one, bunny two, bunny three; all set up like field targets. I drew and skewered bunny one. I drew and skewered bunny three. Then my boss, wanting to get in a shot, killed the only one I'd aimed at.
Damn things were all wormy, though...got the fur and I dried the guts up to back a bow but never got around to it.
jeff halfrack:
glad you got him, tsalagi, thanks I could never put it in words so well I'll take that with me JEFF W
Tsalagi:
Botfly grubs under the skin of a rabbit don't make it inedible. Just flick them away; birds gotta eat, too. ;D
I've eaten a number of rabbits with grubs. Never a problem.
Glad you liked that, Jeff.
