Pat- I have back stitched them like you said many times and never had a complaint about the stitching coming out. But, when I am using alot of rivets, I like to tie it off under one of the rivets. I have also started the stitching by pushing the needle and thread in between the outer layer and the welt, having the needle come out in the first hole, and end it the same way. When I am done, I use a razor blade to trim the thread flush witht the leather.

After seeing your work I should have guessed you already knew. ::) Leather work if fun to do. I learned the old ways so hand stitching comes easy to me and is very relaxing. I have a stitching horse a friend made for me many years ago that comes in handy holding my work when doing either a lot of stitching or stitching on small projects.
