I Built my firsI Bowie knife
Kirkll:
Earlier this summer when I was working down south, I did a bunch of trellis work outside, and was working closely with the concrete guys. That ground down there is just as hard as concrete itself. I spent many days watching those guys using sledge hammers driving steel stakes into that stuff to hold their forms. The thing that caught my eye was that these steel stakes were made out of 5/16” X 1.5” flat steel. Most the steel stakes we use up here, and most everywhere else I’ve seen, are round steel rods.
So I was curious….as a month went by, I was amazed how much abuse those stakes took with no mushrooming on the ends at all. “ That has got to be some bad to the bone steel.” I said to one of the lead men. “ I’d like to have a few of those to make bowie knives.” Well this guy got a kick out of that statement, and handed me an arm load.
so this is what i made out of a concrete stake.   the handle and sheath both are made from a black walnut burl. the leather belt loop was some leather i got from Hank last year to make Tabs out of...and those are antler tips i mounted on the sheath for decoration. Its 15" in length with 10" of blade.
This is what i'm giving my new son in law for Christmas this year. :D Think he'll like it?
