i don't really know whether understand what you mean; the violation of a growthring isn't much of a point here, cause the last bit of the limb doesn't bend and the overlay itself gives protection anyway.

Well, as you blend the overlays into the limb there must be some diging into the limbs back with your rasps. How do you keep from cutting into the limb while shaping the overlays?

I would be careful myself about violating any growth ring on the back of a selfbow anywhere along its length. Its really undergoing a lot of snap and compression from the string as it all comes back from full draw while flinging and arrow.  I tend to work more with laminates myself but have been getting more into selfbows recently.

well, when i blend the overlay to the limb i work the material of the overlay not the surface on the limb!
certainly no digging into the surface of the limb with the rasp!

David, you pre shape the overlay to a feather edge before you glue it up so that just a little light scraping and sanding will get the overlay to blend in with the back of the tip. Also, generally you wouldn't be violating the entire back ring out beyond the overlay so the overlay holds it down.   Pat

Woodstick, I'm sure you get nice trades for cowhorns! Seal the cut with some glue so they don't delaminate; cowhorn seems to be harder than Waterbuffalo but has growth rings way more obvious!
I have a bucket full otherwise I would offer a trade right here!

PS: Especially for horntips on an ELB I honestly believe cowhorn is the only joice!
