How to make a Planing Board?
« on: March 24, 2010, 02:33:12 pm »
Hello all,
I'm trying to find ways to make my own arrows, and I got myself a small thumb plane, but can't seem to get any straight arrows out of it, or at least ones that are the same size.  Does anyone have a way of making, or plans for making a planing board?  I'll initially start out by making 5/16 shafts.  Any help would be great.  Thanks!

I just routered a v notch in a pine board then put a small nail stop at one end

Here is my planing board. Like Dana said I just cut a "V" groove down the center of a board. I did put a wooden stop at the far end.

Thanks.  How deep was the groove?  Does the shaft go inside the grove, and your plane rests on top of the boards?  If I didn't have a router, are there alternatives to cutting it?  (if not, I wonder where one could find one to "borrow" for a cut, hehe)

I'll take a picture of mine when I get off work. It is set up for Tapering and Barrel tapering shafts with a Thumbnail Planer.

That would be awesome.  Will you be able to get dimensions?  This will help alot, thanks!

I cut my grove with a table saw set on 45deg and cut from both ends to make the "V". The shaft material sits in the groove but is above the surface of the board.     With square stock you remove the 4 corners, then the 8 corners then the 16. After that you can sand it smooth.   Go with the grain and take one pass and go the the next corner and so on until you achieve the diameter you want. You can make a gauge with a block of wood and various holes of different diameters to size the shafts.

I did mine similarly to how Pat describes. Put two groves in it though, one shallow the other a little deeper.

I use a piece of wood with 5/16", 11/32", and 23/64" holes drilled in it for a sizing gauge. Helps to get them sized right.

Got a chance to take pictures, here's mine. It's made to reduce square stock and then Barrel taper. And, it'll be up for a trade, too.
