Cement Nail points?

(1/2) > >>

hillbilly61:
A friend /coworker has a forge and does black smithing as a hobby. I asked him if he could make a trad point from a cement nail. We are going to try one night this week. Said the steel might be too hard but it can be worked to the temper we need. Anyone ever try this? How did it work?

Pat B:
I have thought about it but never tried it. The big ones ought to make pretty good points. They are hardened carbon steel.

hillbilly61:
That's what we thought. I'll let y'all know when I get one done.

Inuumarue:
I've forged needle bodkins out of the big ones before.  Just quench in a fast oil.  I experimented and quenched in water and cracked one from point to socket.

Bill Skinner:
What kind of point are you going to make?  Bill
