I don't use salt to dry mine, but I think they taste salty when chewing on them ???

Hmm, I thought it was going to have some taste, the stuff I chewed on was really tasteless.  I did a test wrap around a pencil the other evening when I posted this, It's definitely tough stuff, but will need some kind of a glue finish.  Need to start playing around with the hide glue pearls I have.  Thanks for the input on this thread, guys!
