de barking a hickory with a hammer...

Has any one tried this .DE braking a hickory stave with a hammer ?????

Pappy:
Nope,I would be afraid I would damage or dent the back. I always remove it in the spring or early summer cut.Comes off in one big sheet that time of year.If I do cut it in the winter I take it off with a draw knife. I have hit the bark while splitting it ,a miss lick and it will damage the back.
