linen flax backing

Anybody here use linen flax as a backing? I've read somewhere that it great for backing and will increase poundage. I also read somewhere that it has been known to over power the belly side on some woods. So I tried backing a bow recently with it, but had zero increase in poundage, so I'm wondering if maybe I did something wrong. Does it have to be pre-stretched? Thanks for any input.
