What kind of wood is it from?
Would spruce or pine be okay for building a shaving horse like this or would be not strong enough?

PS: I´m new to this Forum an Bow building. I´m 17 years old, doing Archery for 3 years, and from Germany, so forgive me, if my English is not the best  ::)

you might also consider putting a 1 inch or bigger dowel in the far end of the bench (proud of the surface) so you can push the far end of a stave against it thereby securing the stave side to side while hogging off sap wood, etc.
