Belly splits

Are belly splits best done on green or seasoned wood, or does it matter?

If you belly split green staves you have to really seal the back well, and you sometimes can run the risk of the smaller staves moving on you.

 Other than that is doesn't matter.

I typically do belly splits when the wood is green just to reduce and dry faster, but have done belly splits on seasoned quaters with no problem.

Jeff, be sure to seal the back. A belly split will probably have more moisture in it being from the inside of the stave.

What Pat and Timo said about sealing ,and I have done them both green and seasoned,not much difference, I love belly splits it will almost always follow the growth ring pretty close and no sap wood and bark to remove on woods like Osage. :)
