red oak backing

(1/1)

snedeker:
I have some 30" long 1/8" think strips of oak, and based on Steve's comments about his maple project, I was thinking about what would be good to back thusly. With that length, I'd be limmited to about a 62" ntn bow.  I bet black locust would be a good use, and I have some.  I also have some relatively lightweight osage that might be good.  I wonder if that would be getting a little short for maple or hackberry?

Coo-wah-chobee:
Dave.......I have made some "hack" bows in the 60-62" range pullin' 52 lbs er so. Had no problem, didn't back em 'though. Don't see why it won't work ....................bob

Badger:
dave, I think that the red oak might work very well on the black locust, even though the locust is quite a bit heavier, I have backed locust with hickory and boo and was not satified with the results as I felt the backings were too strong, I would give it a shot if I were you. Steve
