All you need is a good stick and knife.  I build my first bow with a hand ax and a steak knife.  I used a tree that was split in the top by a tree that fell on it.  It was osage and did not have good rings but I shoot it all summer before it cracked. If you live near Iowa I will give you a good stave to get started but you have to pick it up.  I built 4 more bows before I stopped beating my head against the wall and bought a bandsaw.
