cane?

Sorry I couldn't get closer to get better pictures, I couldn't/wouldn't cross the busy street with my two toddlers. Is this the river cane I read about here?

Any idea what it is, I thought for sure that's what we used to cut down and make cane poles to catch perch?

That looks like a type of cane for sure. Im sure it is, its just a different variety. Looks like the stuff we have over here. You should check it out.

I have read there are like 200 'kinds' of bamboo. I would leave the kidlets home and go cut some and see it up close.

If I hacking some of this down doesn't it need to be green? I'm not sure if this stuff turns every year or if our horrible drought killed it.

Looks like phragmites to me.  If so, Patrick (jackcrafty) makes arrows out of it.

I found a restaurant in downtown Plano at lunchtime today that has planted a boatload of bamboo around it's outdoor eating area.  It's pretty young yet, but I wonder if  they might want it thinned a little at the end of next year??

Phragmites is a perennial grass so you will probably have to harvest it next fall. The top growth(grass, cane) dies out each year(the crown goes dormant) and new shoots appear next spring.
