I think initially that hatchet was for shingling - one side to split out the shingle and the other to nail it in place.  They are also very useful for splitting out staves from logs - used as ax to start a split or used as a wedge with the hammer end as a target for your sledge. 

I use one just like it, 2 wedges, and a sledge to split logs.   Warning - you are not supposed to hit metal on metal - so be careful if you do and wear those safety glasses.
