Only reason I could think of why would be same as grinding bases dull so as not to split shaft. See if I can find anything else on them. Bob

The fractured base is reffering to burin type flakes taken across the bottom of the base to create a flat edge.
The burin flakes where sometimes put on the sides of the base, back of ears and even the tip, from what I have read about decatures

1442, I believe the burin base is correct. If I am understanding correctly the flake does not run towards the center of the point but across the edge to make a flat finish or a 45 degree angle along the edge and possibly on opposite sides giving it a "^" appearance. That will make this point interesting to make. Something I have never tried on a base. The rest of the point seems to follow standard flaking techniques.

Just wondering on your thoughts of notching first then burin flake across base or burin flake across whole base then notch. I know clear as mud. I got a real nice thin novaculite pc that looks like he maybe become a Decatur. Bob

Bob, I'm learning more every day. Looks like some are snaped on the end to give it the flat base and others flaked across the base to flatten. I suspect if snapped they would have been notched after, so I think notching is last. Not sure when I will get to try make one of these but hopefully soon. Any other ideads in how it is done?

That's a pretty cool point Zuma. For some reason it took me a while to notice the resemblance to your beads but once I did I jumped right out at me. Nice work like how you kept the stars and strip on there.

Thanks Zuma it is a good challenge and has helped my knapping trying to make a point I've never made instead of making what I get out of a stone. I have really enjoyed it. I don't have any of the books so I've always just made what the stone seemed to want to be. Funny how a lot of the points I see pictures of look like the stuff I end up making. Guess that's what the human race was doing for along time.

had a nice pc of thin novaculite and some time today. Not to happy with the base but rest of point came out ok. I also thin down this turtle back pc of hornstone and got a real nice turkey tail even left the cortex tip, This pc was the last slab so it looked like the heel of bread, flat as a pancake on one side and big ole turtle back on the other.
