stiff ?

i tryed my hand at tanning a hide with ivory soap today and man it was HOT!  anyway, it came out pretty stiff still and pappery in spots. can i smoke to save my progress then resoak it to rework out the remaining stiffness or what?

I've never just used ivory soap, but yes you can smoke It and then resoak it.  I do that with eggs sometimes.  Is the papery part the belly?  Was it grained good?  If not,  dry it completely and sand the grain off before soaking
