First go at flintknapping

So here is my first go at flintknapping. I didnt really intend to make anything, plus this stone was REALLY hard. I was using a metal round hammer. I was looking to get the feel for it and how to flake them off

looks like basalt. aside from a diamond you couldnt of chosen a harder stone. keep practicing on that material and you will go through flint like a pro on your first shot.

 :o Sweet! i figured it was kind of hard considering that my hammer stones (not smooth) were breaking. so its time to amp it up hammer style!  >:D worked out! ill just use some of the flakes to see if i can make an arrowhead ill keep you posted

OUCH!  You're half way between knapping and prison hard labor with that stuff!   :o

Make some bone arrowheads until you can find something more glass-like.  That's what I did.  ;D

Nah, go with real glass.  Works great.  Not to mention plentiful.

And don't pass up an old toilet tank for knappable material, too.  Porcelain knaps and it's cheap enough when someone is throwing it out!

That stuff could pass for some of the dark grey rhyolite that nugget gave me a while back.  I spall it with a 16 ounce ball peen hammer.  My dogwood won't even get a crumble off it.
