Well I tried the thumb release a bit on the weekend. Didn't work out so great for me :-[. The draw felt much heavier on a single digit than spread over three fingers. Maybe a lighter bow would be the ticket.

If you use a thumb release you should use a thumb ring or pa of sorts, and you need to shoot off the "wrong" side of the bow, or add a string loop like you would for a mechanical release.
It does take some getting used to.

Thumb release... only way I can shoot.  Not good for heavy bows, but I can't pull them anyway.
I use a leather thumb protector.   And yes, I shoot off the outside of the bow (over my bow hand thumb).

Three fingers under and middle in corner. This makes for hardly any gaps between 0-20,,
