Hjarno-inspired - now finished (ish)
« on: March 31, 2013, 06:15:20 pm »
Hi All

OK, this was going to be a pyramid, and has been sitting in the drying room for a few weeks reaching equilibrium.
Today it was ready to be tillered, but after reading Whitebeam's thread about the Hjarno find, I had to get the spokeshave out again  ::)

68" tip to tip, 66 3/4" nock to nock, 3" across the fades, narrowing to 1" at the lever, and tapering to 1/2" at the tips.
Back nocks made from ebony off-cuts from the Box of Useful Items, whipped on with Dacron and CA (OK, not very primitive, but it's what I had!)

Got it onto the short string in an hour or so, and some while later, it is back to 28", and sitting at around 65-70lb. 2" to go, and I can afford to lose a few pounds DW.

Herewith the tiller at 28":

Constructive criticism invited  ;D ( Upper limb is on the right. )

Thanks for looking  8)

Looks like it's bending out of the fades but no-where else. Get'er bending in the outer 3rd. and mid-limbs..

I thought the mid-limbs were a bit stiff, but the outer third isn't supposed to bend...  ;)

Outer third actually meaning the last thrid of the limb not the last six inches of the tips.
Inner third (Fades)
Mid limb (Center)
Outer thrid (before the tips)

Got you  ;)

And I see what you mean. Mind you, it took a lot of scraping this afternoon to get the limbs working out of the fades at all - looks like the rest of the limbs now need to catch up a bit.

What kind of wood? That 's some mighty long levers on there. Are you getting a lot of set?

got an unstrung pic, my guess is you have some set what with the way it's bending now, don't yank it back that far till it is bending correctly, mid and outer need to work
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

The mid and outer limbs are working??
If it's 3 inches wide out of the fades it should be doing a lot there. Wide and thin can accept a lot of bend.
Look at where the set is and remove wood elsewhere unless it's properley distributed.
If you've only got 2 inches to your draw length then just sand it and shoot it.

I'll try to get front and unstrung views up later - I'm away out to work shortly...

It's white ash.

There is a slight set (an inch or so), but less this morning than when just unstrung.
The lower limb has a slight reflex-deflex to it that I wasn't able to steam-bend out ( -4C outside, and my jerry-built steaming rig works on butane, so couldn't get it hot enough).

Yes, the mid and outer limbs are working, but maybe not quite enough ;)

OK, have some more photos, plus a bit more work done on it...

View of back - the limbs are even lengths, but I couldn't get far enough from the floor to get it all in!

Unstrung immediately after tillering:

You can see the deflex in the lower limb that I hadn't been able to get rid of!

As per the above advice, I did a bit more scraping where it wasn't taking a set, and got a reasonable (I think) tiller, with the limbs working nicely out of the fades - 3" width should be able to do some work!. Forgot to take a photo at this stage  :-[

I then clamped it down and toasted it:

Result:

Deflex has just about gone, and I am now waiting for it to re-hydrate, and chewing my fingers with impatience  ::)

Repeat to self:
I must wait until the weight plateaus.

I must wait until the weight plateaus.

I must wait until the weight plateaus.

I must wait until the weight plateaus.
 ;D

I shall pass the time re-doing the quick and dirty nock reinforcements 8)
