minwaw wood stain for leather dye?

(1/2) > >>

Lee Lobbestael:
Has anyone tried using minwax wood stain as a leather dye?

Pat B:
Most leather dye is alcohol based and is a penetrating dye. I've never tried wood stain on leather. Do a test on a small piece of leather and see how it works. You can make leather dye with Rit cloth dye and alcohol or even unsweetened Cool-Ade and alcohol.

Lee Lobbestael:
Really? What is the ratio of rit dye to alcohol? And do you use the powder rit dye or the already mixed liquid kind? Also can you use rubbing alcohol?

Thesquirrelslinger:
I would say do NOT use rubbing alcohol as it contains water.
Try 90% Rubbing alcohol, and it might work.
Ethanol, although more expensive, is better.

Pat B:
Use denatured alcohol. I don't have a ratio but do a few tests on a scrap of wood and see which you prefer. The more dye to alcohol the darker it will be and vice versa.
