Thick growth rings!
« on: October 13, 2015, 12:16:02 pm »
The mulberry I just cut down is 11 yrs old and has 3/4" growth rings on one side of it. It is a 10" diameter log at the base and will have some character staves in it. Are the rings too thick? Will have a pic after the glue dries and.i figure out how to post pics.

I have the belief that wide growth rings = stronger wood (in ring porous woods like mulberry).  So the rings can't be too wide.

Ring and half per inch in some areas, 3 rings in others. Log tapers to 7" on the skinny side and has 3 to 4 rings per inch. It's 67 inches long and I'm dying to smash a wedge in it! Also salvaged a nice 44" section that is 3 to 4 rings per in also.

Mulberry typically has wide growth rings.

On hardwoods, the larger the late growth the better.mulberry typically has large growth rings as well. Sounds like you have good wood, get choppin! :)

The last Mullberry bow I built only had 1 growth ring in the entire limb except right out of the fads, worked fine. Pretty normal from the ones I have seen. :)
