Question on hafting

(1/1)

yebon:
I am making a basic spear with a deer leg bone tip.  I have it the way i want but am wondering what i should wrap it with.  The wood is an elm sapling i cut down and i made a notch in to put the point on.  It is pretty stiff so i will need something fairly strong.  It is starting to split down farther than i want it so i also need something to wrap so it does not split farther. I am very new at this and any help is welcomed.

Thanks

Pat B:
If you have it use pitch glue to set the point and rawhide to wrap it.
Cut the rawhide in 1/4" to 1/2" strips and wet and stretch it then wrap it near the point and back down the handle a bit. The rawhide will shrink as it dries and really bind the point and shaft. It will alo prevent the shaft from splitting.

Thank you for the info.  I will get the raw hide and get it done.  I have gathered the pitch and the charcoal and a little beeswax so i just need to make the pitch glue.  I will post pics as soon as i get it set and wrapped.

Thank you so much for your help
