bowtarist:
Sorry it took me so long to post these. I have a Comanche friend who showed me this. It's pretty long, he says for leverage. He saw my boys playing w/ an old shovel handle and after they put it down he asked if I wanted to make a shaft straightener and proceeded to walk me through this one. Seems to work pretty darn good. So...here it is. dp

4dog:
gonna try one of those...notches on opposing sides or ends?

Both.  Check out the grain orientation too. He told me that it was important.  Start out small with the slots, you can always widen them but you can't make um smaller.  The perpendicular notch is made real well, the slant one is not as good.  The perp notch kinda looks like a Teeki God mouth. Keeps the shaft from rolling out when in use.  When you get it done, post a pic. START SMALL W/ THE SLOT.
