backing bow with deerhide? update!!

(1/5) > >>

4dog:
i got a bow that i want to back with deerhide...i need to deal with the hide..quickest expedient way to get the hair off and the rest of the meat..so i can use it would be helpful..thanks.

aaron:
first, get a really dull drawknife and a 6 foot section of PVC pipe at least 6 in dia. secure the pipe for a work surface and use the draw knife to remove as much of the meat and membrane as possible. Draw knife or other knife must be so dull that you could never cut yourself with it- kinda like a butter knife without serrations.
next, soak the hide in plain water. check daily to see if the hair will pull out with ease. when it does, scrape the hair side and rescrape the flesh side.stretch and  tack it to a wall or plywood to dry.

bubby:
pressure washer to get the meat and membrane off

Mohawk13:
Throw some wood ash in the water with the hide...Hair will fall off in a day or so...

4dog:
it was an old dried with meat still on it hide...a bit rancid smellin but heres where im at.
