i'll tel ya what, that texas chert is some tough stuff, i wear through hammerstones like crazy and always end up with a brusied leg. i find it frustraiting to work with. good job with it.- Ryan

if your gonna take it up start with obsidian, dacite or a good heat treated flint. obsidian is the easiest but be ready to bleed. i think my favorite teaching/learning stone is dacite. you can get it relatively cheap, works similar to obsidian and it doesnt cut ya up as much as obsidian. if you dont want to spend the money find bottles with flat bottoms or sides, even plate glass. wear gloves and eye protection and work in a well ventilated area. those little chips get everywhere, hence the bleeding. get ready to cuss a lot and break a bunch of rock ;D theres a fella on youtube that has some excellent vids that will help ya out a lot. just type in "flintknapping tips". thers many others that show great work but he's my favorite
