As for the species: eastern red cedar, aka ERC, is Juniperus virginiana. Pretty common as an ornamental conifer in Europe (there are two in my parent's garden).
A rather common species in N-Europe and Canada is Juniper communis, the common juniper, whose berries are still used to flavor gin. This species doesn't have red heartwood, so it seems you do have ERC.
All true Junipers (Juniperus species) seem to be excellent in compression and make good (backed) bows. Maybe your next Juniper could be a native one.
