beaver tail?

(1/1)

JEB:
I was given a split beaver tail that has been tanned however it is pretty stiff.  I would like to soften it up a bit so I can use it for a selfbow handle.

Anyone with suggestions on how to do that?

Outbackbob48:
Jeb, first off mine were not tanned just air dryed. I soaked them in a pan of water until plyable, towel dryed and wrapped and fitted to handle, sewed up the front and let dry. hard as a rock but still on my bow at least 5 yrs now. Go real easy on the sewing they won't take much stretching. Good Luck Bob

PEARL DRUMS:
If you glue 1/2" wide strip of leather on the inside where the holes get punched, you can pull a bit harder without tear outs.

Outbackbob48:
Pearl, why didn't that ever occur to me :o That's a great tip, Thanks Bob

PEARL DRUMS:
You never asked! ;)
