First post PA!!

I've been lurking here for quite awhile and I figured it was time. I'm on my 3rd Osage self bow and it's going to be so, so. Kind of discouraged with it right now so it's sitting. First 2 were made for my girls and are maybe 25#s and have horrible tiller work, they love them though! I have a few Osage staves that were gifted too me and also have access to a variety of bow woods from the land I hunt. Cut a 3" Osage sapling (couldn't help it) and 2 muscle wood saplings today while out hanging stands. Muscle wood is probably just wasted as I didn't know to cut late spring, know now and there is a lot of it, good Osage also. Sorry for the long post, just wanted you guys to know  a little about me.

why would it be wasted to cut it now? I cut almost all of my bow wood around this time. 3" saplings are what I make most of my bows out of and they work great! welcome to PA, you'll love it here!

You'll prob' find it's easier to tiller a 40# than a 25# there is a little more margin for error.

Welcome to PA, Mulberry. If I may, get a stave or board and learn proper tillering without thinking about the bow you want to make. Once you get the tillering process down then you can make any bow you desire. Until them they are just unevenly bent sticks. Tillering makes the bow!

The bark would be very difficult to remove as both have drill bit like character too them. They are both sealed and stored now. Going to start marking them too cut late spring. Read where it the bark just peels off then.

Welcome...dont disgard the musclewood...scrape the bark off carefully..itll teach you an important lesson in bowmaking called PATIENCE!!!! ;)  :laugh:

Yes, true words  -  I have destroyed lots of bows because not being patient!

You can scrape the bark off the back and leave some in the valleys and just finish over it. To be honest though, the bark will probably scrape off with a dull spoon pretty easily this time of year.
