Tried something new
« on: November 16, 2015, 06:45:28 pm »
I found a really great scallorn point a while back. The camp where I found it is washing into a small creek.  I have found numerous arrow points scallorn, Perdiz & Sabinal. Most are serrated & many have been made from an agitated wood found locally.  This stone is amazing clear, milky white, red, brown, purple mixed & translucent.   I've been picking up every piece I can find.  Most are small, but every now and then I find one about the size of my hand.
I picked up a small piece from the camp & decided to copy the scallorn I had found.  The 1st pic is it in situ. Then the stone & finally the points.

Man, that is a cool looking point and I really like the material. I'd swear it was coral if not for the straight lines in it.

It's not glass It's wood . I have some with knot holes in it. There are natural caliche hills around 3 Rivers TX. The wood is about 3' down from the surface.  I'd swear I have some that are opalized. I'll post some pics of the raw stone tomorrow

Don , excellent. Do your flakes run  good one way and tuff across the grain?  Bob

Nothing wrong with the one you made, but the one you found is absolutely killer.
Must be a good camp to scavenge thru.

Very nicely done. Some people just have an eye for finding points. My friend Alan and I can be out looking and he'll find ten before I can spot the first one.

Thank y'all for the compliments. I wish I could send every knapper a ton of it.  Patrick knapped a piece at the Classic. I have about 200 lbs saved up so far.  Bob, some of the lower grade wants to follow the old grain.  The hi grade has no grain.
Here are a few pics of what I found last week.
