Here is another...  This one was lightly stained with an "english oak" stain and then a brown rit stain for the streaks.  Coated with spar urathane.

Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

I like the red one best, but all are nice. What does the bow say it wants?

With finishes that nice you certainly have no need to kill snakes for the skins. I liked the dark dyed grain with a lighter stain for a complimentary color like in #1. I also like the fade to dark tips on the kids bow. I've been playing with layers of stain and dye with sanding in between. You certainly can get some interesting looks that way.

There are some places out there where the snakes are overly plentiful and being killed just because they're poisonous and close to homes. I don't mind getting a hold of skins from these because they were going to be killed anyway. I even looked into farming copperheads a little, but it wouldn't be legal at my current address. Did you know a female copperhead is capable of asexual reproduction? When no males are around she will give birth to clutch of clones of herself.

If its for me I like the one the kids painted on. For some reason I just like to see kids involved.

Especially since we're talking the ones who can't get a mate.

Well thanks for the help!  ??? ???  I will just have to see what kind of mood I'm in this week when I work on it - I have the whole week off.  Went and shot some carp with my brother today - they are just starting to spawn here.

D.K. - Yep, I have no trouble with people using snake skins for bows - they are a resource that can be used.  It seems around here though, the common belief is the only good snake is a dead snake.  People kill our bull and fox snakes and just leave them lay.  Seems like a waste to kill a harmless snake just to leave it lay.  I do have a couple of road kill bull snakes in my freezer that I will use on a bow sometime.
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

This thread has been a little too quiet lately.  Here are some teasers of Plan A, which is finished and shot in pretty well. Plan B is sanded and ready for the oil finish starting tomorrow.  I could be ready to ship in a week (assuming I can stop shooting these.)  Only problem is I haven't seen much progress from my victim lately, so I don't know if he is coming along or not.  Guess you all better start posting if you ever want to see the rest of this one, or of the other, which I think is even better. . .
