Tanning Question

(1/2) > >>

clewis:
Has anyone brain tanned commercially treated rawhide? I have some frozen brains and some rawhide I picked up from a tannery for backing material, just wondering if I`ll end up wasting a good brain. Any input of feedback greatly appreciated.

Thanks

nclonghunter:
I see no reason the rawhide should be treated with anything to prevent it from being brained. You will have to soak it until soft before braining so you should get a good feel for the hide and wash out anything that may have been added. Again, I never heard of anything being added to rawhide. Another option is using Ivory Soap in place of the brains. You will have to smoke the hide either way.
Good Luck

riverrat:
all hides are rawhide until they are soaked, brained and stretched.Tony

Lumberman:
Used to work at a tannery and raw hide was raw, we would salt them early but then we would have sold them as salted if someone came in for them so I second the others, probably good to go

clewis:
Thank you fellas, I really appreciate some sound advice.
Cheers
