Bone Tipped 66" Red Oak Bow
« on: May 20, 2016, 10:15:26 am »
This is my third bow and first of 2016.  I wanted to change things up a bit from my first two bows so I made it 6" shorter and got fancy with the handle and tips.  I got some bone from a dog toy, which turned out to work quite well as a tip overlay.  As a side note, bone is probably the most horrible smelling material I have ever worked with.  For the handle I did four layers with a square inset in the top layer.  I'm really happy with how the handle turned out; the inset blends into the layer below and it looks like it's all one piece.  I used a card scraper for the first time on this bow and I must say, it is a great little tool.  For the backing I used some wrapping paper with a tree pattern on it (seemed appropriate).

It pulls about 45# at 28".

Lots of photos and more information on it here:  http://www.diydudes.com/red-oak-longbow-with-bone-tip-overlays-2/

The full draw photo isn't quite straight which makes the tiller look worse than it is, but I think in the future I need to get a little bit more bend into the inner limbs.

Nice looking bow and your thought about getting the inners moving a bit is right on, but it still looks pretty good.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Great job on your 3rd bow. It's weird, I used to hate the smell of sinew, hide glue and horn/antler dust, but now it's like a fine wine to me haha

I don't see anything wrong with that tiller....nice job! Looks like you're getting the hang of with that being only your 3rd...

Great  looking bow.

And while we might learn to like the smell of bone burning on a belt sander or bandsaw, convincing the wife it smells good is a whole different matter.

Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it.  This bow making business sure is a lot of fun.

Great  looking bow.

Nobody at my house was willing to come close enough to even find out what it smells like.  I suppose complaining about horrible smells doesn't pique the interest of most people.

I really like that bow man...well done.  That handle inlay is really cool....gonna have to try that.  Gonna have to try some red oak again at some point too.
