Preserving deer hide handle on bow?
(1/1)
Lumberman:
I have been around taxidermy my whole life but haven't paid close enough attention I guess. Using a tanned deer hide strip for the handle what should I use to oil it? I know a real basic oil was used originally but this hide is super old. Just finding a spot that was in good shape was a bit of a challenge, but down by the back legs she was holding up great. Off my first deer 14 years ago is why I am even messing with it. I didn't know if teak oil would be okay or if I should tb3 it down nice and hard. What would you do?
Pat B:
If you are going to oil it use neatsfoot oil, mink oil, Montana Pitch Blend or bear(animal) grease.
BowEd:
I agree with Pat B for oil used.Neats foot oil.Just enough to make it supple. Not over oiled any.Assuming you have a chrome tanned hide there.
Many a time I've used contact cement for leather onto wood with good success for the handle. It stays.
Lumberman:
Thank you sirs!
