Persimmon ELB 60# @ 27"
« on: April 30, 2017, 08:38:20 pm »
I finally finished up the persimmon elb I started on back in early February. It's 75" NtN with the handle wodth being 1.25" wide, keeping that width for 5" each way of center before tapering to 3/8" at te nocks. The belly is well rounded in the normal ElB fashion and was heat treated. It took about 1.5" of set, starting with about 3/4" of reflex. It's not a rocket launcher, but is a good solid performer with only a little thunp in the hand. Over all I'm very happy with how this wood performed in this bow style, and the wood is good looking on its own.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

Great looking bow.  That is a long one.  I get it has a smooth draw.

Nice bow!
I'd even say it could be a few inches shorter :D Maybe next time, right? ;)

Is there a reason why you didn't let handle bend?

Nice job on that one. I've never made an ELB before, but it's on my list for sure. Congrats!

Thanks everyone.
This bow is Very smooth, it doesn't even feel like its 60#. I left it as long as I did because of hearing how notorious persimmon is for taking set even when built to what should be proper dimensions and tiller. And this was my first try with this wood. Even at the length it is, it took ebough set that I ddidnt want to induce more by making it shorter. It probably would be fine taking a few inches off or being pulled further. Being as long as I is, and reading that the lower the weight of an ELB, the firther out you want the bend to be from the handle. To both keep up arrow speed and keep down hand shock. And to me 60# is still of the lower end for this style bow. At least that's my thought process anyway. When I went to shoot it for the first time I was expecting lots of handshock and a sluggish cast, but it surprised me.
Even for its length it's still not too bad to pack around and shoot. It's just difficult to get through doors and into vehicles.

looks good... I'm looking forward to seeing it and some of the others at MoJam soon.  I have lots of small persimmon trees if you ever want a sapling to play with... :)

Id love to bring this one to MoJam if I still had it by then. But it's heading out to its new home by then. But in te mean time, I have a longer and much heavier one in the works that should be done by then. If only the rain would stop long enough to get some work done on it.

Nice one, and also the leather work is fine!
Maybe you could learn to pull longer draw to 29 or 30. The bow is long enough and the performance will get better.
