I was just using one of those ratcheting cargo straps. They would probably work well too.

I will often do the first stringing of my warbows on the tiller stick.  Use the two strings together.  Stand close to the bow and pull the long string down on the pulley.  Hold the rope with one hand and slide the shooting string into place.

Either that or two hands and two feet oncthe bow and ask someone else to slide the loop on
