Heat resistant finish?

Has any one tested finishes for heat resistance?  Truoil, polyurethane, spar varnish, wood bowl finish, home made finishes?  I'm making some trivets and want to seal them.  I know most anything will scorch if it gets too hot, but normal cooking temps should not, I think! -C- >:D (lol)!  I am testing spray poly, salad bowl, and my beeswax/flaxseed oil spoon finish.  Thanks,

For cooking equipment could it be to use the same thing used on wood stoves?I use stove black on my stoves.It's baked on.The stove does'nt rust any.
Our cast iron pans are seasoned with vegetable oil on the inside.

The trivet is used to set hot dishes on, usually on on the table, but also near the stove.  Stove black would probably darken the wood or act like paint, and blacken it completely.  I have seen some trivets that were badly scorched from having a too hot skillet set on them directly from the stove or oven.  I am going try try spar urethane as well.  I think my test pieces will be cured enough to test tomorrow by placing a cooking temperature skillet on the and see what happens.

Excuse me.I thought your trivet was made of iron for a camp fire.Got any pictures of your project?

I did forget to mention they were wood!  Opps! Will try to get some pictures this afternoon.  Most of the pieces are walnut, and I will make cork feet for them.  I will sand them down to320 grit with my random orbital sander before I finish them.
