Gotcha! Orienting the construction/apparatus with the arrow direction was what I was missing. Hasn't anyone tried putting a mark on the lower limb to line up with the horizon. I haven't had a chance to try that as it's been too cold.

I tried a few by making a line on the ground to shoot from where.... at my height and the usual hold on the bow, a friend holding a square with a level and a 45.. told me when I was at the right angle. of course it helped that I was shooting at (or alongside) the last leaf on a tree hanging in front of me.
