I've never been happy trying to file/rasp on a shave horse, They were designed for use with pulling tools. I do have a stave clamp that I stand up at, and the stave is held down by ropes, this design seems to work for both push and pull types. I haven't posted pics in a while, but I'll see if I can dig a few up. Or, here's the link to an old thread about that design.

I remember seeing that. It might be worth making up one just in case the horse doesn't work. It's supposed to rain so I'm going to be testing the horse instead of yard work.
