Made this one today from a raw Texas tab for a purpose other than slaying a Mastodon.

Trapper, the flutes are done with a Solberger jig that applies a massive amount of pressure.
I'm sure you could do it. This preform was thick and the contours weren't too good but the jig just blasts the flute right through it.
The second flute actually dove through and took an inch off the tip, so I had to reshape a tip on it after fluteing it.
