Moose Antler for ELB Tips
« on: September 25, 2019, 07:38:31 pm »

I got some moose antler on the weekend, 5-6" long, looks pretty solid right through to the core. Do you only use the very tip one per tine, or can you also use solid material further back as well?

I've only used the tips of cow horn but I'd think moose antler would work fine especially if it's solid. Just be sure it's not pithy inside.

Use it as far back as it is solid.

hamish,

moose horn here is noted for being very dense and tough, solid through out, much harder than cow horn, and is preferred for knapping tools and horn spitting gluts.  the tips will work for sure if not broomed too bad, and you should have a good bit of workable materiel leftover

There is an artist in the Black Hills that carves antler jewelry and such. He has a strong preference for moose for the reasons Willie mentioned. Elk is second, and deer is last on his list.

If you have moose available, you should do just fine. And if you want to go to the effort, you can polish it to a glossy finish!
