Rawhide backed Red Oak

56" ntn red oak deflexed recurve bow. Drawing around 35lbs at 25". Backed with cow rawhide using hide glue. It's a pleasure to draw this bow. Bog oak tips overlays and natural leather grip. It's my first rawhide backed bow and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. It took around 1" of set.

Nice work. I’m surprised it took 1” set with that design and draw length. The profile could easily accommodate a longer draw if you had enough width. Any reason for the rawhide backing?

Ryan - I backed this bow because the it had some drying cracks and I wanted to reinforce it. Also I was curious how the backing will work with this design

Very nice looking bow, tiller looks great. Nice work. Did you thin the cow rawhide,I have't used any in a while but the last I used was pretty thick so I sanded it down some. :)

I just saw the backing video. Your craftsmanship is consistently excellent and you produce beautiful bows.

You probably already realise it, but that rawhide you used was about 3 times thicker than ideal. Good stuff to use if you want to edge a viking shield though.

Deerskin is better if you can get it because its much thinner. Other options are goat, or kangaroo rawhide.

Old time bowyer's used strips of artists vellum, or clarified calfskin, which is much thinner.
