I started lay out on two black locust staves.  These are staves I cut in 2016 and I managed to get them dried with the sap wood intact.  These are really dense staves and I plan to build a sap wood backed BL bow.  I have made two other bows from this tree with the sap wood and they turned out great and really have a nice look with the contrast between the sap wood and heart wood.  One stave is 63 inches and there is 67 inches.  Hopefully both will work.  I will post some progress pictures soon.

My trade bow is coming along. Still want to wait a little bit longer to start tillering to make sure its dry enough. I think I'm going to rawhide back the bow. I am trying to figure a way to incorporate this snapping turtle tail into the bow somehow. ;)

Got 2 bows tillered out and ready for finish and shot in. One is bamboo backed padauk and the other is bamboo backed eastern red cedar with an oak core.  Padauk is 68" and the erc is 60"

Wel the yrzi composite bow is built. However it need some serious tillering. It’s about 100lbs too heavy of course that’s my fault cause I left the horn about 3/8” thick. I didn’t expect the horn to provide this much resistance.

Debating on birch bark or snake skin covering afterwards…. Or maybe some dyed rawhide…. Let me know what you guys think.

Plodding along on my prototype,  this Scotch Broom is pretty amazing, there are 18 large knots but its drawing to 12 inches with no set. Lots of work left to do. Need to get the middles and outers moving properly and some twist removing.  I've gone slowly because the bend is all in the fades where cleaving left  a weak spot and I've been working hard at avoiding set there.  The limbs will need heat bending to balance them too, tips piking an inch and shaping, nocks to cut....

I got the rough out done on 1 of the black locust staves today.  If all goes well this stave will end up with about a 60 pound draw weight and show both the sap wood and heart wood throughout the bow.

Guys - the show up bow arrived from Arvin today...and I will say that it is certainly the nicest self bow I’ve ever put my hands on! Perfect lines, narrow tips, the grip is perfection! If this isn’t inspiration to get working on your own masterpiece, nothing will be! Not my place to even string it, yet alone shoot it, but it is mighty tempting! Many thanks Arvin, and I can’t wait to hold this drawing! I’ll probably video it and send a link of the drawing so that when I win it no one can cry foul! 😉

High time I got back to work.  I messed up the tiller on the sinew bow and don't have enough weight to fix it, so I dug out this cherry board and will try an ALB.

Oh, baby, that's a fine bow Arvin made! so for the chance at that bow, you just have to be ready to ship by the deadline? which is like Oct 20 or something?
Why must we make simple things so complicated?
