Heat straightening pointers?

<< < (2/3) > >>

Don W:
I've only been back using selfmade wood arrows about a year after a good 30 year hiatus. I find hickory the hardest to straighten. It just takes more work and the only ones I make that really require a lot of heat. The nice thing is you can run over them with your truck, straighten and go back shooting them. They're tough as nails!

WhistlingBadger:
Thanks, guys.  I heat treated a few and realized I'd never have time to get them all done.  Lo and behold, I found out they DO hand straighten.  You just have to put a LOT more pressure on them than POC or spruce.  I had to put so much bend on them I think those other woods would have broken, but they straightened up and they're holding.  Interesting.

BowEd:
For shoot shafts or bamboo making yourself a little tool for bending close to ends or abrupt kinks helps. The ends is where you especially don't want any kinks. For split timber shafts it's not needed.
Just a stick with a diagonol tapered 3/8" groove.

archeryrob:
I used a wrench like BowEd and but mine had a hole through it, but same thing. I used bacon grease on the shaft and target the spot with a candle flame. Once it gets small you can target the spot and roll the arrow to not scorch it. You'll feel the wood get soft when it feels like it will burn you.

PS, it makes you hands really soft too. ;)      Oh and the dogs want to lick your hands later on.

Well, I like to hunt in griz country.  Having arrows that smell like bacon might be a really bad idea.   ;D
