Tool Kit
(1/1)
RickB:
Recently I had someone ask to see the tools that I use to knap with. Figured I'd post the photo here also.
These stay in the toolbox of my truck along with enough rock to keep me occupied. RickB
Tool Kit:
various size hammerstones
abrading stones, natural and man made
deer/moose/elk antler billets
copper and brass hammers (the one with the blue handle is a copper aircraft hammer)
one burned out (to soften the steel) Craftsman 3 lb hand sledge
dogwood billets - larger one not in the photo
modern and primitive pressure flaking tools
notching tools
leather, hard rubber, wood w/leather hand pads
Ishi sticks (appx 18" long) several Delrin & wooden with copper tips
primitive Ishi sticks - one with antler tip and also an elk spike tine
several copper rods
paulc:
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. My tool "collection" doesn't come close. Paul
gutpile:
And I though I had a bunch of tools... HA..gut
GlisGlis:
that's a very nice set!
they can inspires toughts on moderns vs ancient nomadic knappers.
Imagine if you had to carry around all those magnificent tools by foot :-K
RickB:
Yeah, they do get pretty heavy trying to lug them around so I keep most of them, minus the hammers, in my truck tool box in a bucket and a small
tote. Been to knap-ins before and it beats me down lugging them around or making multiple trips back to the truck for something else I need. Today
I was rooting around in the backyard shed and found another large copper hammer and a large dogwood billet. Dogwood works great on rhyolite.
A few points from this past week.
